First IGHL Home Is Donated To IGHL

44 Years Later…First IGHL House is Donated

Independent Group Home Living [IGHL] opened its first group home in Mt. Sinai, New York, in 1978 at a rental home nestled into the beautiful north shore of Long Island. The purpose of this home was to provide a safe and loving homelike environment for people with disabilities. After 44 years, Mr. Bruce Acker donated the house to IGHL.

Today, this house is a home to nine people who are supported and empowered to live as independently as possible. From the way they decorate their room to how they spend their time to what movies to watch and planning their meals, this home offers support, independence, and a built-in community, all at the same time. Thank you, Mr. Acker, for this very generous and sincere gift to IGHL. The Mt. Sinai House is the foundation of the entire IGHL organization and holds a special place in our hearts.
