Everyone deserves to live in a home that represents who they are.

At Independent Group Home Living (IGHL), more than 400 people live in our community-based residential homes. These homes enable people who live with intellectual and developmental disabilities to experience living in a home environment while receiving the specialized care and support they require.

Dawn moved into IGHL’s Jamesport house 14 years ago where she had her own room. She would visit with her family every weekend, however, in 2022 Dawn developed a chronic illness and was in and out of the hospital. Her condition has led her to require greater medical care and support than was available at home. For some people who live with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their health can quickly become fragile, requiring a higher level of care and support.

The Eastport Manor IRA (Individualized Residential Alternative) is one of three IGHL homes that provide specialized nursing care in a home environment. These homes support people like Dawn so that they can live in a home-like setting while receiving medical support services 24/7.

Dawn recently celebrated her 39th birthday at her new home. She is thriving with the care and support that she needs. One of her favorite things about living in the Eastport Manor house is the “Music Man”, who visits weekly. Dawn has always loved music; her face lights up as he sings and plays the keyboard.

“Her fun personality is coming back after being sick. I have seen the change in her, and I know that she is well taken care of by the staff in the home.”
